Ayurveda as Supportive Care
How Ayurvedic approaches — focused on strength, digestion, and rejuvenation — can support quality of life alongside conventional cancer treatment.
HOW AYURVEDA CAN HELP ALONGSIDE CANCER TREATMENT
Ayurveda, India's traditional system of medicine, offers a body of knowledge focused on strength (bala), digestion (agni), and rejuvenation (Rasayana) that many patients and caregivers find valuable as supportive care during and after conventional cancer treatment. Used this way — alongside, not instead of, oncology care — Ayurvedic approaches are generally directed at improving day-to-day quality of life rather than treating the cancer itself.
Areas where Ayurvedic supportive care is commonly discussed include:
- Digestive strength and appetite — dietary approaches (Pathya-Apathya) to support appetite and digestion during treatment, when nausea or taste changes are common
- Strength and recovery — Rasayana-oriented approaches aimed at supporting recovery and vitality during rest periods between treatments and after treatment ends
- Sleep and stress — daily-routine (Dinacharya) practices, gentle yoga, and pranayama that many patients find helpful for stress, sleep, and general wellbeing
- Skin and mucosal comfort — external supportive measures sometimes used for skin or mouth discomfort associated with treatment, always discussed with the treating team first given sensitivity during active treatment
These are areas of general interest and ongoing study, not established replacements for oncology treatment, and individual suitability varies — which is exactly why this section exists alongside, not instead of, the Understanding Cancer section, and why every recommendation here should be discussed with your oncology team before you begin.
WHAT AYURVEDA IS NOT, ON THIS PLATFORM
This site does not present Ayurvedic treatment as a cure for cancer, as a replacement for surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or other prescribed oncology treatment, or as safe by default alongside every treatment regimen. Some herbs and formulations can interact with chemotherapy or other medications, so any Ayurvedic approach should be discussed with, and ideally coordinated between, your oncologist and a qualified Ayurvedic physician.
