Ayurveda and Nutrition During Cancer Treatment

Traditional wisdom with modern nutritional safety

Ayurveda & Integrative

Ayurveda gives importance to food.

Ayurvedic approaches traditionally consider factors such as:

Appetite

Digestion

Food tolerance

Daily routine

Individual constitution

Season

Strength and recovery

These principles may provide useful perspectives for supportive care.

But cancer changes the nutritional picture.

During treatment, the immediate priority may be maintaining adequate:

Energy + Protein + Fluids + Essential nutrients

Some patients may need more nutrition than usual because cancer and its treatment can increase nutritional demands or reduce food intake. 

A practical approach

An Ayurveda-based dietary plan should be:

IndividualizedNot every cancer patient needs the same diet.

Nutritionally adequateIt should provide enough calories and protein.

Compatible with treatmentIt should not interfere with medical treatment.

PracticalIt should be possible for the patient and family to follow.

SafeFood and water hygiene are particularly important when immunity is reduced.

What should I be cautious about?

Be careful with dietary advice that says:

"Never eat protein."

"Avoid all carbohydrates."

"Only drink juices."

"Cancer patients should fast."

"A particular food can cure cancer."

"All animal foods are harmful."

"A detox diet will remove cancer."

These are broad claims and may not be appropriate for every patient.

Remember

Ayurvedic nutrition can be part of supportive care.

But during cancer treatment, adequate nourishment must come before restrictive dietary ideology.

This information is intended for education and supportive care. It does not replace consultation, diagnosis or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional. If you have cancer, do not stop, delay or change prescribed cancer treatment because of information found on this website. Tell your cancer-care team about all medicines, Ayurvedic preparations, herbs, vitamins and supplements you use. This is especially important for the Ayurveda section because interactions between cancer medicines and supplements/herbal products can occur.
