Can Chemotherapy Damage My Body Permanently?

Some side effects disappear after treatment. Others can last longer.

Questions You're Afraid to Ask

The short answer

Some side effects disappear after treatment. Others can last longer.

The risk depends on the specific medicine, dose, treatment combination and your individual health.

Possible long-term effects may involve:

Nerves

Heart

Kidneys

Fertility

Bones

Hormonal function

Memory or concentration

Emotional wellbeing

Not everyone develops these problems.

Ask:

"What long-term effects are possible with my treatment?"

"How will you monitor for them?"

"What symptoms should I report after treatment?"

Follow-up care is important because some treatment effects can appear months or years later. 

Remember

Knowing about possible long-term effects is not meant to frighten you.

It helps you recognize problems early and receive appropriate care.
