How Will I Know If My Cancer Has Returned?

There is no single symptom that proves cancer has returned.

Questions You're Afraid to Ask

The short answer

There is no single symptom that proves cancer has returned.

Symptoms depend on the type and location of the cancer.

Possible warning signs vary greatly.

A new persistent symptom does not automatically mean recurrence.

What should you do?

Follow the surveillance plan given by your cancer team.

Report symptoms that are:

Persistent

New

Worsening

Unexplained

Do not wait for symptoms if your doctor has recommended scheduled tests.

Remember

Do not monitor yourself obsessively.

Know your follow-up plan and contact your healthcare team when something concerning occurs.
