Panchakarma and Cancer

What should patients know?

Ayurveda & Integrative

What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is a group of traditional Ayurvedic therapeutic procedures.

Different procedures may be used depending on the Ayurvedic assessment and clinical context.

Can Panchakarma cure cancer?

There is not enough reliable clinical evidence to recommend Panchakarma as a treatment that cures cancer or replaces established cancer therapy.

What about using Panchakarma during cancer treatment?

Extra caution is needed.

A person undergoing cancer treatment may have:

Reduced strength

Dehydration risk

Nutritional problems

Low blood counts

Increased infection risk

Bleeding risk

Surgical wounds

Treatment-related organ problems

Some intensive procedures may therefore be inappropriate at particular stages.

Does that mean Panchakarma can never be used?

Not necessarily.

If a person wishes to consider an Ayurvedic procedure, the decision should be individualized and coordinated with the cancer-care team.

The timing matters.

Never use Panchakarma to:

Delay cancer treatment

Replace chemotherapy

Replace radiotherapy

Replace surgery

Claim that cancer toxins can be "flushed out"

Treat a cancer emergency

Remember

Traditional therapy still needs modern safety assessment.

If you are considering Panchakarma after cancer treatment, discuss it with a qualified Ayurveda physician and your cancer-care team.

This information is intended for education and supportive care. It does not replace consultation, diagnosis or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional. If you have cancer, do not stop, delay or change prescribed cancer treatment because of information found on this website. Tell your cancer-care team about all medicines, Ayurvedic preparations, herbs, vitamins and supplements you use. This is especially important for the Ayurveda section because interactions between cancer medicines and supplements/herbal products can occur.

Reliable sources: National Cancer Institute (NCI), World Health Organization (WHO), relevant national cancer-care guidelines, and appropriate peer-reviewed evidence.
