Sleep Problems During Cancer Treatment

Rest is part of recovery

Ayurveda & Integrative

Why can cancer affect sleep?

Sleep may be disturbed by:

Anxiety

Pain

Treatment side effects

Medication

Changes in routine

Hot flushes or other symptoms

Excessive daytime sleeping

Worry about the future

Simple steps that may help

Try to maintain a regular sleep and wake time.

Keep your bedroom comfortable and quiet.

Avoid large meals, excessive caffeine and stimulating activities close to bedtime.

If you cannot sleep, try a quiet relaxing activity rather than becoming frustrated in bed.

Gentle relaxation, breathing exercises, meditation and appropriately adapted yoga may help some people. 

Where might Ayurveda help?

Ayurveda places importance on regular daily routine and appropriate sleep habits.

An Ayurveda physician may help you develop an individualized routine.

However, do not use sedating herbal products without discussing them with your healthcare team.

When should I seek help?

Talk to your doctor if:

You regularly cannot sleep

Sleep problems are affecting daytime functioning

You are excessively sleepy during the day

Anxiety is keeping you awake

Pain is disturbing your sleep

Sleep problems are becoming worse

Remember

Good sleep is not a luxury during cancer recovery.

It is part of taking care of yourself.

This information is intended for education and supportive care. It does not replace consultation, diagnosis or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional. If you have cancer, do not stop, delay or change prescribed cancer treatment because of information found on this website. Tell your cancer-care team about all medicines, Ayurvedic preparations, herbs, vitamins and supplements you use. This is especially important for the Ayurveda section because interactions between cancer medicines and supplements/herbal products can occur.

Reliable sources: National Cancer Institute (NCI), World Health Organization (WHO), relevant national cancer-care guidelines, and appropriate peer-reviewed evidence.
