Stage generally describes the extent or spread of cancer.

Grade describes characteristics of cancer cells seen under the microscope and, for many cancers, gives information about how abnormal the cells look and may behave.

Why does grade matter?

Together with other findings, grade can help doctors understand the nature of the cancer and plan treatment.

Don't confuse:

Stage = How extensive is the cancer?

Grade = What do the cancer cells look like and how may they behave?

The exact meaning depends on the cancer.
