What Does "Integrative Cancer Care" Mean?

Treating the disease while caring for the whole person

Ayurveda & Integrative

Integrative care is not "either Ayurveda or modern medicine."

It is about bringing appropriate forms of care together.

Modern cancer treatment remains central to treating the cancer.

Complementary approaches may be added when they are appropriate, safe and supported by reasonable evidence.

Think of it this way:

Cancer treatment→ Treats or controls the cancer

Supportive care→ Helps manage the physical and emotional effects of cancer and its treatment

Integrative care→ Brings appropriate aspects of both together around the needs of the individual

What may be included?

Depending on the person's needs, integrative cancer care may include:

Medical cancer treatment

Nutrition support

Physical rehabilitation

Psychological support

Yoga or appropriate physical activity

Meditation and relaxation

Selected complementary therapies

Appropriate Ayurveda care

Pain and symptom management

Social and family support

Not every therapy is suitable for every person.

What is the difference between complementary and alternative?

Complementary means using an approach along with standard cancer treatment.

Alternative means using an approach instead of standard cancer treatment.

For cancer, replacing proven treatment with an unproven alternative approach can be dangerous.

The patient remains at the centre.

Good integrative care asks:

What does this person need?

Not:

"Which system of medicine is better?"

Remember

The purpose of integrative cancer care is not to create competition between systems of medicine.

It is to provide safe, coordinated and person-centred care.

Any complementary therapy should be discussed with your cancer-care team, particularly during active treatment.

This information is intended for education and supportive care. It does not replace consultation, diagnosis or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional. If you have cancer, do not stop, delay or change prescribed cancer treatment because of information found on this website. Tell your cancer-care team about all medicines, Ayurvedic preparations, herbs, vitamins and supplements you use. This is especially important for the Ayurveda section because interactions between cancer medicines and supplements/herbal products can occur.

Reliable sources: National Cancer Institute (NCI), World Health Organization (WHO), relevant national cancer-care guidelines, and appropriate peer-reviewed evidence.
