Why Am I Afraid Every Time I Get a Small Pain?

After cancer, ordinary symptoms can feel frightening.

Questions You're Afraid to Ask

The short answer

After cancer, ordinary symptoms can feel frightening.

A headache may make you think of the brain.

Back pain may make you think of metastasis.

A cough may make you think the cancer has returned.

This fear is understandable.

But remember

Every pain is not a sign of cancer recurrence.

People continue to experience ordinary illnesses, muscle pain, infections and other health problems after cancer.

What should I do?

Do not diagnose yourself from the internet.

Note:

Where the symptom is

How long it has lasted

Whether it is getting worse

Other symptoms

Then discuss persistent or concerning symptoms with your doctor.

Remember

You do not need to ignore symptoms.

But you also do not need to assume the worst.

Ask. Check. Then respond.
